WIT Studio (Graphic Design)

WIT Studio, an immersive workshop experience based on the Reframework. For Motivate Design.

WIT STUDIO / an immersive workshop experience

Context
In the late summer of 2014, we had a big idea. What if we could help everyone – executives, teachers, doctors, children – solve big, wicked problems? What started as a casual conversation – between CEO & Founder of Motivate Design, Mona Patel and I – became a central offering at Motivate. It has spurred change in an enormous range of industries: from banks to middle schools and everywhere in between. It would become the foundation of Mona's book, Reframe: Shift the Way You Work, Innovate, and Think and help us build a stronger innovation consultancy.

Proposal
At the core of this project is the WIT Studio, an immersive workshop experience designed to help anyone uncover fresh responses to old problems. It's simple: feeling stuck is a choice. Drawing from classic aspects of design thinking, the WIT Studio guides a group of 10-40 people through an all-day intensive in creative problem-solving. Using a Playbook, a member of the internal team leads the way, using a mixture of collaborative and personal modules to help their team identify & define their problem, build empathy (and Problempathy!), discover new ideas, funnel and select key directions,  identify and confront personal and professional barriers, flesh out concepts, and walk away with solid options.

The Workbook. At the start of a WIT Studio, each participant receives their own Workbook, containing the worksheets needed for that day. These are printed full color offset, on 80# matte paper, with 120# cover featuring holographic foil-stamped art. Roles & Responsibilities: Design development & execution. Content development and copy writing.

The Playbook. After moderating many WIT Studios for our clients, we concluded that the experience would be more successful if the moderation was done – instead – by an internal stakeholder, with a member of our team facilitating. This has proven to be a more effective approach. However, it necessitated the production of a comprehensive moderator's guide. The Playbook is 240 pages of detailed instructions, scripts, examples and much much more. It is printed in full color offset on 80# matte paper, with a slate gray 150# cover featuring holographic foil-stamped art. It is spiral bound and has 24 color-coded tabs for easy access to the various modules.  Roles & Responsibilities: Design development & execution. Content development and copy writing.

The sheer volume of assets produced for the eco-system of this project is daunting to consider in retrospect. Offline and online, this project required customizable, high-touch experiences at every turn. Largely, Mona and I led the effort and the execution. With help from my colleagues at Motivate, this project gave me the opportunity to blossom into a confident art director / print designer / public speaker / moderator / copy writer / proof reader / account manager and human.

I'd like to thank:
Mona Patel (Creative Direction/Everything), Jack Cole (Design & Creative Direction), Ken Moran (Project Coordination & Management), Leigh Altshuler (Project Management, Coordination, Content Development), Anne Borremans (Design Support & Creative Direction), Emily Chu (Content Development), Dom Crockett (Content Development), Sean Echevarria (Marketing Support, Coordination, smiles), Fernanda Heber-Martins (Design Support), and Aliki Svolou (Design Support).
